You can spend an entire stay on the property and be happy. Plenty of guests do. If you want one day that feels like classic Hill Country, point the car toward Gruene and New Braunfels. It is a short drive, and it pairs well with a late check-in or a lazy morning at the yurt.
Gruene Historic District
Gruene sits on a bluff above the Guadalupe. Gruene Hall has been booking live music since 1878 — Texas’s oldest continuously operating dance hall. Go early if you want a table. Stay for a set even if you do not know the band. The room does the rest.
Around the hall: the Gristmill restaurant in the old gin ruins, independent shops, and the kind of porch-sitting that makes you late for dinner on purpose. Wear comfortable shoes. The district is small and walkable.
The river, not just the lake
Below Canyon Dam, the Guadalupe runs cold. In winter and spring it is a trout fishery. In summer it is the tubing run Texas is famous for. Outfitters line River Road between the dam and New Braunfels. If your group wants to float, book tubes in the morning and plan a late lunch. If you would rather watch the water than sit in it, drive River Road slowly. Cypress tunnels, limestone, and the occasional heron are the point.
Whitewater Amphitheater
When a show is on the calendar, Whitewater Amphitheater is the summer-night move. It sits on the Guadalupe a short drive south of the dam. Texas country and red-dirt acts play there through the warm months. Check the lineup before you book your stay if a specific night matters.
Then come back
This is why the yurts work as a base. You are not returning to a highway hotel. You are returning to a private driveway, a kitchenette if anyone is still hungry, and a hot tub that does not close at 10. That last hour under the oaks is usually the part people talk about in the review.
