Start with the water
Canyon Lake is an 8,200-acre reservoir with room for pontoons, jet skis, fishing boats, and a slow sunset cruise. The closest marina is a short drive from the property. If you bring your own boat or trailer, use the extra parking north of the road before the bridge — look for it as you come up Charter Oak Drive.
Do not have a boat? Rent one. Canyon Lake Marina and other nearby outfits typically offer pontoons, jet skis, and ski boats in season. Pack a cooler from your kitchenette, take the lake in the morning when it is quieter, and leave the afternoon open.
Parks and swim beaches
Comal Park on the south shore is the family swim-beach favorite when it is open for the season — pea-gravel beach, picnic tables, playground. Canyon Park on the north shore has swim access and the Madrone Trail if someone in the group would rather hike than float. Overlook Park at the dam is free, short, and worth the stop even if you only have 30 minutes. The view across the main basin is the postcard shot.
Hours, vehicle fees, and ramp status change with season and lake level. Check WORD of Comal County and the Corps of Engineers the morning you go so you are not surprised at the gate.
Come home to the yurt
That is the part most lake hotels cannot do. Each yurt-cabin has its own patio, charcoal grill, and private hot tub. Rinse off, start the grill, and let the lake day settle. Kids can spread out. Couples get the tub to themselves. Nobody is fighting for a shared pool chair.
